When people feel empathy, they will often mirror the emotional state of the person they are empathizing with. This is done by activating the same brain regions. The study found that psychopaths not only showed less activation in the brain regions associated with empathy, but they also showed less mirroring of the emotional state of the person they were with. This study provides evidence that psychopaths may not be able to feel empathy in the same way as non-psychopaths. It also suggests that they may not be able to understand the emotional state of others, making it difficult for them to act morally in accordance with societal norms.
