Discussion of Whether Robots Can Be Conscious Essay Sample
Overall, the essay does a good job of outlining the various arguments for and against whether or not robots can be conscious. I found the section on Phineas Gage to be particularly convincing, as it showed that even a physical change to the brain can affect a person’s consciousness. However, I was less convinced by the section on Mary’s Room, as it seems to rely on the assumption that knowledge can only be gained through experience. This may be true in the case of colour perception, but it’s not clear that it would be true for all mental states.
