Conflict in The Yellow Wallpaper Essay Sample

Conflict is an important factor in Charlotte Perkins Stetson’s short story, The Yellow Wallpaper. Through the use of a diary format, the author is able to provide readers with an intimate look into the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist, Jane. This is most effectively done through the use of tone, which changes as Jane’s psychological condition worsens. The use of short and disconnected sentences near the end of the story, illustrates how Jane is not as lucid as she was previously. The use of symbolism, in the form of the yellow wallpaper, is also effective in representing the internal conflict of the protagonist. This wallpaper represents the structure of family, medicine, and society, in which the narrator finds herself trapped.
