The protagonist of the story is a woman who is suffering from postpartum depression, and due to the prevalent attitudes of the time, is not getting the help she needs. The doctor’s prescription of complete bed rest only worsens her condition, and she starts to see the world around her as the wallpaper does; full of confusing and contradictory rules. Gilman uses the story to show how the attitudes of the time affected women, and how they often had no voice to speak up for themselves.
